Transportation

Travel to Bern

We recommend traveling by train and using Switzerland’s excellent public transport network.

Depending on your place of departure, air travel may be necessary.

Bern has a small regional airport, but the nearest major airport is Zurich. Geneva and Basel airports are also less than two hours away from Bern.

Timetable and ticket price information for public transport in Switzerland can be found on the website of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). In addition to train connections, you will also find bus and tram timetables, as well as door‑to‑door route planning using full street addresses, for example from the address of your hotel to the address you would like to go to: The SBB online portal for timetable, trains and public transport

You may also wish to check the SBB SuperSaver Tickets, which offer very attractive fares on selected connections: https://www.sbb.ch/en/offers/supersaver-ticket

Please note that SuperSaver Tickets are valid only for a specific train and departure time and cannot be used flexibly. Standard tickets, on the other hand, are valid for the whole day on the chosen route, providing full flexibility.

About Bern

It is the political heart of Switzerland. Bern is home to the Swiss government, parliament, and federal administration. While it is not officially designated as the capital in the Swiss constitution, it has served as the country’s federal city since 1848 and serves as the de facto capital.

The Old City is the medieval city center of Bern. Built on a narrow hill bordered on three sides by the river Aare, its compact layout has remained essentially unchanged since its construction during the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Despite a major fire in 1405 -after which much of the city was rebuilt in sandstone- and substantial construction efforts in the eighteenth century, Bern's old city has retained its medieval character.

The Old City is home to Switzerland's tallest minster as well as other churches, bridges and a large collection of Renaissance fountains. In addition to many historical buildings, the seats of the federal, cantonal and municipal government are also situated in the Old City. It has been a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site since 1983 due to its compact and generally intact medieval core and is an excellent example of incorporating the modern world into a medieval city. The entire Old City has been designated as one of the Swiss Cultural Properties of National Significance, as well as numerous, specific buildings within the Old City.
